Today's Religious School looks very different, in many ways, from the Hebrew School of the past. New approaches, flexible timeframes and new pedagogies are all part of this new way of helping our children make the most of their part-time Jewish learning experience. Affiliation with BJE means that a school has been vetted; they have reported to have the basic requirements of a school environment- curriculum, trained faculty and oversight and management that form the foundation upon which a thriving learning community can be built.

Our curriculum revolves around guiding the students to become knowledgeable and committed American Jews. The religious school trains its students to successfully participate in Bar/Bat Mitzvah services, however, our view is that the students' Jewish education does not end with Bar/Bat Mitzvah; but continues into their adult life. For this reason, we promote family educational programs whenever possible, and concentrate on areas that are relevant to the age and level of the child, rather than attempting to teach them “everything” prior to Bar/Bat Mitzvah. The school is almost free of charge and all Jewish children are welcome regardless of level of observance or background, in order to make Jewish education easily accessible to all. Our teaching staff caters to each student’s individual needs and abilities, ensuring that each child receives a quality Jewish education, equal to that of a Jewish day school. Our teachers continually work hard to provide students with a complete learning experience. One of the goals of Nagel Jewish Academy is to make Jewish learning fun. It is imperative that in this day and age children are presented with a positive experience and encouraged to have a positive attitude towards Judaism. If the paintbrush, dance shoe, sense of humor, yoga mat, and drum kit were as integral a part of Jewish education as a tallit, siddur, and Hebrew letters? Open Temple’s Creative Torah Academy is a unique Jewish Journey for students to engage in Torah, Jewish Civilization, Thought and Traditions through art, music, dance, theater, nature and spirituality. Our studio sessions, creative activities, discussion forums, guest artists and visits to locations around Venice and Los Angeles nurture the Jewish imagination and critical thinking. And we believe in setting families up for success. We depart from the traditional weekly Hebrew School obligation and offer a program of twice/monthly experiences. Approximately once a month your student will attend Creative Torah Academy – our Hebrew School of the Arts. And over the course of the school year you you are invited to attend enrichment experiences–again, usually offered on a monthly basis. Mordecai Kaplan, the inspiration for the founding of Reconstructionist Judaism, is famously quoted saying, “Judaism is the evolving religious civilization of the Jewish people.” Within that statement, Kaplan captures the enduring vivacity, community and spirituality of the Jewish people and its most enduring element: adaptability. At Creative Torah Academy, we are not only teaching the next generation of Jews about the content of Jewish history, thought and peoplehood, but the methods of thought behind Jewish adaptation. The disciplines of art and spirituality are the lenses through which we refract the “hidden Jewish light” that the Torah teaches us was created on the first day of creation, and collectively explore what is revealed through this “bending” of tradition. Creative Torah Academy brings the Open Temple methodology of “performance art ritual”- engaging prompts, contemporary conflicts, creative departures from text and tradition – into the “Hebrew School” classroom, where the classroom is transformed into an atelier, dance and yoga studio, and black box theatre. Our students are young people who thrive in the creative and individualistic curriculum, who think for themselves and enjoy sharing their individuality with others to create something larger together. Our students are the children of intermarried couples, assimilated Jews, Jews without Jewish education, or Jews with too much Jewish education, Jews who feel disenfranchised or alienated from Jewish life as the prayers and rituals seem remote or Jews on the periphery and their children. Open Temple provides a place for all of the “Jew-ishly curious” to reclaim our spiritual center right where we are and apply the knowledge we possess to the knowledge we inherit. “Co-Creators” are playful, fun, quiet, bold, colorful, shy – and what we all have in common is that we are curious and willing to create something through our curiosity. Together. RSVP Email: info@opentemple.org Contact Phone: (310) 821-1414 Open Temple House - 1422 Electric Avenue, Venice CA 90291 read less

There is a parking lot entrance off of Effie, and gate codes are required (provided upon enrollment). We may also meet around town in parks, people’s homes and cafes when it is appropriate to the lesson. Kindergarten - 8th grades. Our Mission Simcha – Focus on the joy of learning and Jewish identity Kehillah - Create a community where families will engage in and celebrate Jewish life Dor l’dor - Engage in multi-generational learning and develop family rituals and connections that reflect our individual beliefs Historia - Understand the history of the Jewish people, and the influence it has on our present and future Tarbut - Immerse in Jewish arts & culture Tzedek - Act upon our tradition’s commitment to justice, both within our community & the greater world She’elah - Encourage an open environment for questioning, while exploring a variety of perspectives of the Jewish tradition Our Approach We use the Responsive Classroom model for learning, where social interaction and process are equally as important as academic learning. We encourage positive teacher language, avoid rewards systems, and establish self-rules for the classroom. We are supporters of interfaith marriage, and any families of varying backgrounds who are choosing to explore Jewish heritage. When discussing lifecycle events we work toward reimagining rituals for the modern family, including the open support of gay marriage and single parents. While G-d is often a character in Jewish story or the center of Jewish prayers, we do not impose a theistic belief on our students. We give students options and keep ideas open, while remaining truthful to the content. Stories from the Torah are taught as mythology with historical context. Ethics are socially focused, rather than externally imposed. G-d is part of our intellectual discussion, but not our moral dictator. We examine how human beings benefit from morality, such as: Shalom Bayit (peace in the home), Tikkun Olam (Repairing the world), and Hachnasat orchim (Welcoming guests). We believe in providing all people with accessibility to Jewish history, culture and community. read less
