Our curriculum revolves around guiding the students to become knowledgeable and committed American Jews. The religious school trains its students to successfully participate in Bar/Bat Mitzvah services, however, our view is that the students' Jewish education does not end with Bar/Bat Mitzvah; but continues into their adult life. For this reason, we promote family educational programs whenever possible, and concentrate on areas that are relevant to the age and level of the child, rather than attempting to teach them “everything” prior to Bar/Bat Mitzvah. We seek a Judaism that promotes innovation that is deeply rooted in Jewish tradition, while reflecting the understandings and spiritual yearnings of contemporary Jews. In the Jewish Experience center, we work to create a child-centered, experiential approach to education which inspires children with the joy of all things Jewish: Torah, prayer, Jewish living skills, celebrations, the arts, history, culture, ethics, values and Hebrew . We have a variety of programs, including a monthly family Shabbat dinner and service, the Outdoor Jewish Experience and Kehillat Israel Tzedakah Teens, a teen philanthropy group which gives approximately $20,000 in grants each year. There is a parking lot entrance off of Effie, and gate codes are required (provided upon enrollment). We may also meet around town in parks, people’s homes and cafes when it is appropriate to the lesson. Kindergarten - 8th grades. Our Mission Simcha – Focus on the joy of learning and Jewish identity Kehillah - Create a community where families will engage in and celebrate Jewish life Dor l’dor - Engage in multi-generational learning and develop family rituals and connections that reflect our individual beliefs Historia - Understand the history of the Jewish people, and the influence it has on our present and future Tarbut - Immerse in Jewish arts & culture Tzedek - Act upon our tradition’s commitment to justice, both within our community & the greater world She’elah - Encourage an open environment for questioning, while exploring a variety of perspectives of the Jewish tradition Our Approach We use the Responsive Classroom model for learning, where social interaction and process are equally as important as academic learning. We encourage positive teacher language, avoid rewards systems, and establish self-rules for the classroom. We are supporters of interfaith marriage, and any families of varying backgrounds who are choosing to explore Jewish heritage. When discussing lifecycle events we work toward reimagining rituals for the modern family, including the open support of gay marriage and single parents. While G-d is often a character in Jewish story or the center of Jewish prayers, we do not impose a theistic belief on our students. We give students options and keep ideas open, while remaining truthful to the content. Stories from the Torah are taught as mythology with historical context. Ethics are socially focused, rather than externally imposed. G-d is part of our intellectual discussion, but not our moral dictator. We examine how human beings benefit from morality, such as: Shalom Bayit (peace in the home), Tikkun Olam (Repairing the world), and Hachnasat orchim (Welcoming guests). We believe in providing all people with accessibility to Jewish history, culture and community. read less

Graduates of the Religious School are knowledgeable Jews who are comfortable with their Jewish identity. The School helps them to develop an inner spiritual life that is connected to the Temple community and the global Jewish community. Students explore Jewish practice, history, belief, love for Israel and the Jewish people, and an understanding of their obligation to make the world a better place, through fun and innovative teaching techniques. The program is further enriched by involvement in Hebrew study, music, Krav Maga, Jewish Art, Israeli Dance, T'fillah (prayer services), and family participatory programs. NEW PROGRAM FOR 2010/2011!!! Stephen S. Wise Temple Religious School is proud to introduce iLearn, a flexible and innovative new pilot program for Grade 4 students! We know students live in an ever-evolving world - with technology, the Internet, digital games, and mobile technology. While adults may have a hard time staying current with so much change, our children - are what some call, "digital natives." Our new program will integrate technology into every area of the learning community, including teaching instruction, student collaboration, student work, and evaluation. In addition we are proud to collaborate with the Union of Reform Judaism to present the Chai Curriculum in its first ever digital format! iLearn requires a two-day commitment: Sundays from 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m. at Stephen S.
